Parks & Trails New York is helping to usher in spring with two, statewide volunteer events. Canal Clean Sweep will clean up and beautify sections of the NYS Canal System and Canalway Trail, while I Love My Park Day will allow volunteers to show their favorite state parks and historic sites some love.
Most Canal Clean Sweep 2014 events are scheduled for the weekend of April 25-27. Now in its ninth year, Canal Clean Sweep celebrates Earth Day by involving thousands of volunteers in clean up activities, helping to prepare the NYS Canal System and Canalway Trail for the the 190th consecutive navigation season.
There’s still time to volunteer. Visit the event page where you’ll find a map of scheduled events and list of event organizers. If you don’t find an event close to you, why not organize one for your family, business, or organization. Contact Jamie Meerdink at Parks & Trails New York for more information.
On Saturday, May 3, the third annual I Love My Park Day will offer an opportunity for volunteers to show their love for New York’s parks and historic sites by cleaning up park lands and beaches, planting trees and gardens, restoring trails and wildlife habitat, removing invasive species, and working on various site improvement projects. Register today for an I Love My Park Day event near you!
Several new state parks and historic sites will be joining the many parks that participated last year. Stony Brook State Park, Niagara Falls State Park, Robert Treman State Park, and Valley Stream State Park are just a few of the new additions.
