I Love My Park Day Project Builds Bridges

photo 1Park staff and volunteers have long dreamed of making the Peerless Loop Trail in Saratoga Spa State Park more handicapped accessible. Thanks to a grant from GE and the work of volunteers on I Love My Park Day and beyond, that dream will become a reality this fall.

On I Love My Park Day in May, great progress was made toward meeting Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines for the Peerless Loop Trail when GE volunteers worked with the Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park and park staff to widen the trail in several locations.

The work done on I Love My Park Day was followed up with three Saturday workdays this summer to add a 25-foot pedestrian bridge. Volunteers assisted with pre-drilling and assembly work at the park restoration shop. On the final workday, volunteers helped transport the bridge components to the work site and complete the final assembly. Crane operator Salvadore Tree Service donated time and equipment for the assembly as well.

Funding for the nearly $5,000 project was made possible through a Corporate GE Volunteers grant.

A project funded through NY Works to install a paved path across the lawn areas where the path currently runs is expected to be completed this fall, making this trail completely ADA accessible.photo 2
