To participate, visit Parks & Trails New York’s Canal Clean Sweep page, where you’ll find an interactive map showing all the Clean Sweep events that have been scheduled across the state. Find the event on the map that’s most convenient for you, click on the icon, and register by following the link in the info-window that pops up.
If you don’t see any organized events in your community, it’s easy to put one together yourself! Organizing groups receive free Canal Clean Sweep T-shirts. The Canal Corporation will provide trash bags and arrange for the disposal of collected and bagged trash, but each group will be expected to provide its own tools (if needed) as well as work gloves. To organize a local event, register online at http://www.ptny.org/canalway/sweep/ no later than March 16, 2015.
Last year more than 150 communities, civic groups, businesses, and social clubs took part in 105 cleanup and beautification events along the Canal System and the Canalway Trail. Your participation will ensure that the 10th Annual Canal Clean Sweep is an even bigger success. Whether it’s picking up litter and brush on lock grounds, helping to remove debris from a local Canal park, or preparing a section of Canalway Trail for the thousands of visitors that arrive each year, your efforts will enhance and preserve this tremendous environmental, cultural and historic resource.
For more information on participating or coordinating an event in your community, contact James Meerdink at firstname.lastname@example.org or (518) 434-1583. Thank you for your continued partnership and interest in improving recreation, tourism and community revitalization along the New York State Canal System.
