Volunteers from community groups and social clubs will be getting their hands dirty weeding and trimming overgrown brush, removing debris and trash, and enjoying each other’s company as they prepare the trails and canals of the 524-mile New York State Canal System for the upcoming 192nd navigation season as part of 2015 Canal Clean Sweep. With more than 100 events registered and thousands of volunteers expected to participate, the 10th anniversary of the annual Earth Day event is sure to make a major impact on hundreds of communities across the state.
Most of this year’s Canal Clean Sweep events are scheduled for April 17-19; however groups will also be hosting spring cleaning events on other dates in April and May.
