With more than 7,800 state parks, vacationers have a lot of places to choose from to get their nature fix. But which are the best to visit? After four weeks of voting, Letchworth State Park took home top honors in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice award for Best State Park.
Celebrated as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” it is no wonder this magnificent park has gained the love of a nation. The park welcomes more than 750,000 visitors to Castile, NY, about 45 minutes from Rochester. Visitors can explore 66 miles of hiking trails in addition to nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks, tours, white water rafting and hot air ballooning. Construction on a new state-of-the-art nature center is expected to begin May 2015.
New York was the only state to have two parks in the top 10, with Watkins Glen State Park taking third place. In a press release form the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Commissioner Rose Harvey expressed that they are “extremely honored” in Letchworth State Park’s first place honor and “equally thrilled” that New York State was one of three states with more than one park nominated.
