New York State Parks seeks volunteers to assist in Trail User Survey and Counts
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is updating the Statewide Trails Plan (SWTP) for 2015. The Statewide Trails Plan provides the overall vision, goals and objectives for the creation of a statewide trails system. Collecting data on trail users and the frequency and types of use on New York’s trails helps guide development of the SWTP.
This August, OPRHP will conduct a trail user survey as well as a trail user count on multiple shared use trails across the state. OPRHP is seeking the help of friends groups, trail organizations, and individual volunteers familiar with shared use (multi-use/greenway) trails in their area. Volunteers will assist OPRHP by installing and filling survey boxes at popular trailheads as well as conducting counts of users on the trail. Final trail selection will be based on the quantity and location of volunteer responses received. Materials for the trail survey and detailed instructions for the trail user count will be provided by OPRHP once the final trail locations are selected.
