New York State opened its 180th State Park this summer. Located on Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, the 190–acre Buffalo Harbor State Park features picnic areas, a playground, a pedestrian walkway, and fishing access along the city’s waterfront.
The park was allocated $15 million from Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion and New York Works initiatives. The new plans began back in September when Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority transferred 350 acres of open and underutilized land to the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation. Original renderings of the park can be found here. Given its proximity to Niagara Falls, officials are hopeful that Buffalo Harbor State Park also achieves status as a world-class destination.
It is hard to believe that this area along the Buffalo harbor that is perfect for a park was lacking such an amenity for so long. Now residents and visitors can enjoy a brand new park that boasts a waterfront along the harbor and close proximity to the heart of Buffalo.
